![]() The Triple Stryke has three tails, all three with stingers at the end and that can braid into one dangerous tail. Their tails have silver, gold and bronze tones, with details on its orange wings and different designs on their body and wings. Titan Wing Triple Strykes have two pairs of horns on their heads, as well as larger and sharper dorsal spines. Their forelimbs act as pincers, which also resemble that of a scorpion. Each tail is made up of many round segments and is equipped with a scorpion-like stinger, though some individuals, such as Syringaca, have egg-shaped structures on their tail tips instead. The most notable feature is its thick, braided tail that can unwind and split into three thinner ones. It has two large ear-like appendages on its head and a pointed nose. The Triple Stryke is a stockily built, arachnid-like, bipedal and seemingly digitigrade dragon with armored plates on its back that resembles an armadillo's and two legs. In School of Dragons, the eggs have the same appearance and color, but they more round, like most eggs in this game. They are smooth, shiny, and oblong shaped with some small nubs on them. In Rise of Berk, Triple Stryke eggs are a dark red color, with almost black sections in the middle. The ear-like appendages were intended to be much larger and the dragon had much more spikes on its head. A piece of concept art depicts the Triple Stryke with an underbite, a characteristic which was later dropped. The Triple Stryke was mainly based on scorpions in terms of appearance. When confronted by one, the best thing to do is turn tail and run! Beware of this Dragon, Vikings! Once it has you in its sights, it's nearly impossible to it shake off your tail. This giant Strike Class Dragon's three tails can slash through its enemies or snake around its prey. A Triple Stryke's braided tail is a force to be reckoned with, but each tail produces a unique venom: A sting from the first tail numbs combatants, the second disorients them with mild hallucinogens, and the third creates an agonizing of burning in your very blood. But victory sometimes breeds vanity and exploiting this overconfidence is often the only way to defeat a Triple Stryke in battle. With their barbed hides that deflect attacks, their intense fire blasts that blind opponents, and their tail triad that braids into a single powerful weapon, a Triple Stryke wins most bouts on intimidation alone. Displaying an ornery disposition from the beginning of their lives, Triple Strykes make the ideal champions in underground combat arenas. These are only three of the words that describe the Triple Stryke in battle and the incredible fury it unleashes with its trio of braided tails. ![]() 4.1.5 Front limbs like scorpion pincers. ![]() ![]() The effects of this calamity are felt throughout Outlast 2's inability to self-synchronise and assume a coherent order. If the apocalypse is the end of time, then time falls apart in retrospect inasmuch as the very idea of “retrospect” holds no meaning. With attention to the way its narrative elements split, wrench sideways, and in general fail to add up, it's possible to read the game not as just some leaden fantasy about poorly disguised sexual hang-ups but a response to something less tangible - the displacing of Newtonian by Einsteinian physics, and the associated crumbling of the notion of time as a linear absolute. Outlast 2 deals, perhaps not all that intentionally, in something far stranger. Fallout, for instance, treats us to panoramas of vintage trash, flash-frozen in decrepitude by the nuclear blast for the advantage of subsequent wasteland wanderers. Many apocalypse games present the end of all things as a question of, well, things. Time, indeed, is the real victim of Outlast 2's apocalypse. The effect of all this toing and froing is a sense of dislocation more upsetting than any heap of butchered limbs. Adding insult to injury, the flashbacks are played in reverse chronological order as you advance through the present-day story. During these flashbacks, Blake's body strays through the town of Temple's Gate of its own accord: when you finally tear free, you'll find yourself somewhere unrecognisable with no idea of how much time has passed. At intervals, the sounding of a baleful horn plunges him into flashbacks of his old school, where you'll pursue the spectre of his long-dead childhood friend Jessica. Your character Blake also has a very slippery grip on the present. The game appears to take place in the course of a single night - a night during which the moon passes through a full cycle and Lynn somehow carries her baby to term. ![]() The trouble with the moon's role as timepiece, however, is that time in Outlast 2 is all wrong. Presiding over all this and growing steadily bloodier of aspect as the finale approaches, the moon serves as campaign clock and body clock, reflecting the story's fixation with the flesh of suffering women. There's also a rival faction of Satan worshippers who are hell-bent on abducting Lynn to ensure that the Anti-Christ lives out a long and unholy life. The cult's leader Sullivan Knoth is convinced that Lynn's child is the Anti-Christ, having spent many years bedding his followers with the express purpose of spawning said Anti-Christ and murdering it in the cradle (a self-deluding sadist whose writings are awash with talk of the “girth” of god's message, Knoth doesn't have much truck with the idea of contraception). The game's plot sees your character's wife, Lynn, becoming miraculously pregnant as you flee a community of scabby, pseudo-Christian cultists, deep in the wilds of Arizona. Like many a horror game before it, it explores the uses and ever-so-many abuses of the female body, and in the process, it manages to put time through the wringer, too. Outlast 2 builds on this association in using the moon's behaviour to mark chapter transitions in a story about misogyny. More specifically, the moon is often associated with the timeframes of human reproduction: the length of a lunar cycle, 29.5 days, is roughly that of the menstrual cycle, though there is no direct relationship between the two any more than the angle of Saturn's rings determines the severity of erectile dysfunction. Its position and appearance are the basis for innumerable timekeeping and navigational systems, from Mayan calendars to the astronomical procedures still relied upon by present-day sailors. The moon has always played a role in how we tell time, of course. ![]() It's also something of a timekeeper, waning and waxing as the story proceeds towards a possibly Biblical, possibly scientific apocalypse. It's a wonderful ambient device in a game that is otherwise one gigantic charnelpile, a glowing cavemouth amid the clouds which ices the surfaces of barren lakes and raises the skeletons of farmyards from foetid darkness. There is little about Red Barrels' schlocky, prurient first-person horror outing that deserves real admiration, but you can't deny the power of its moon. What's your favourite moon in a game? The lipless satellite of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, perhaps? Overwatch's rather cosy lunar map? Somebody asked me this a few weeks ago - genuinely, we'd been talking about First Man - and to my surprise I found myself thinking of Outlast 2. Check back tomorrow, if we're still all here. RPS is having an Apocalypse Day! We're celebrating the end of the world and games about it. ![]()

Of the 21 games we've tested the last one we're going to discuss is Monster Hunter World. Oddly we did see a 10% performance boost at 1440p, I suspect with a reference clocked 580 you'd see more double digit gains and I'll look into this in a moment. Then at 1440p the margin between the 580 and 590 is reduced to just 2fps, a 4% performance advantage going the way of the 590.Īnother 5% performance gain is seen in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, rendering 63 fps on average opposed to the 580's 60 fps.Īt 1440p we see just a single frame advantage going to the 590, that said it was 14% faster than the GTX 1060.įorza Horizon 4 played really well on the RX 590 at 1080p as frame rates never dipped below 80fps. Here the RX 590 offered a 5% performance bump over the 580 and that meant it was 11% faster than the 1060 at 1080p. This is our first time benchmarking with Hitman 2. The RX 590 was 7% slower than the GTX 1060 and just 6% faster than the 580, which equates to two extra frames. Here the 580 and 590 are easily beaten by the GTX 1060 at 1080p. The Assassin's Creed series has been a bit brutal for AMD recently and Odyssey is no different. At 1440p we see the same 5% margin, here the 590 provided an additional 3 fps over the Aorus RX 580 XTR, not exactly exciting stuff is it? Strange Brigade results at 1080p have the RX 590 performing 5% above the 580 and 16% faster than the GTX 1060. On the upside, the RX 590 was a full 20% faster than our GTX 1060 card. This is the kind of margin we were expecting, though that difference is reduced to just 3% at 1440p. Benchmarksįirst up we have Battlefield V results (don't miss our recent RTX ray tracing test!) and here the XFX 590 was 7% faster than the Aorus 580 XTR, taking the average frame rate from 85 fps to 91 fps. In total we have results for 21 games at two resolutions, 1080p and 1440p but the commentary will be focused on 7 of the more recently released titles. Our benchmarks were ran using a Core i7-8700K clocked at 5GHz and 32GB of Vengeance DDR4-3400 memory. If you don't mind extrapolating however, previous tests will give you plenty of straight GPU comparisons if that's what you want (RX 590 excluded of course). ![]() We were unable to test the usual big battery of GPUs for this review, so you'll notice the absense of more affordable models such as the RX 570 and 3GB GTX 1060, though we included as many results as we could. ![]() Meanwhile, the RX 580 comes in at around $230 (MSRP), and right now can be found for as little as $200.ĪMD claims up to a 12% performance boost over a reference clocked RX 580, yet they think that means they can increase the MSRP by 22%, so this should be interesting, or upsetting depending on your position.įor testing we're using the XFX Radeon RX 590 Fatboy and it will be compared to the Gigabyte Aorus RX 580 XTR and MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X+. AMD has sullied this launch by pricing the RX 590 at $280, which is a considerably premium for this slightly overclocked RX 580. It's important to clarify this context because for testing we felt it would be misleading to compare the RX 590 with a base model RX 580 using the AMD reference clocks. Then there's the higher-end models like the Gigabyte Aorus RX 580 XTR, which we use for testing, and that particular model comes clocked at 1425 MHz, reducing the RX 590's clock speed advantage to 8%. However since most entry-level RX 580 models are clocked at 1380 to 1410 MHz, this gives the RX 590 a 10-12% clock frequency advantage out of the box. So in essence we're getting the same RX 580 with a 15% overclock, at least when comparing the reference clock speeds. There are no additional stream processors, no fancy GDDR6 memory, or even GDDR5X memory for that matter. What we have here is Polaris 20 XT on the 12nm FinFET process, and this small change translates into slightly better clock speeds. This is technically a new GPU, but kind of not new at the same time. Today we're checking out the new-ish Radeon RX 590 and on hand for testing we have the XFX Radeon RX 590 'Fatboy'. The 16:10 ratio allowed some compromise between showing older 4:3 aspect ratio broadcast TV shows, but also allowing better viewing of widescreen movies. When good quality alternate technologies (i.e., liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and plasma displays) became more available and less costly, around the year 2000, the common computer displays and entertainment products moved to a wider aspect ratio, first to the 16:10 ratio. The 4:3 aspect ratio was common in older television cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, which were not easily adaptable to a wider aspect ratio. On CRTs, there was often a difference between the aspect ratio of the computer resolution and the aspect ratio of the display causing non-square pixels (e.g. The 16:10 aspect ratio had its largest use in the 1995–2010 period, and the 16:9 aspect ratio tends to reflect post-2010 mass-market computer monitor, laptop, and entertainment products displays. The 4:3 aspect ratio generally reflects older products, especially the era of the cathode ray tube (CRT). The favored aspect ratio of mass-market display industry products has changed gradually from 4:3, then to 16:10, then to 16:9, and is now changing to 18:9 for smartphones.
